Tribal leaders pleased that
feds determine Ancient One to be Native

The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation is pleased to hear today that the federal government has determined that the Ancient One (a.k.a. Kennewick Man) is Native American based on the age of the remains.

According to Armand Minthorn, Board of Trustees member and chair of the Tribe's Cultural Resources Commission, "This news only confirms our original viewpoint that this individual is Native American. It is disturbing, however, that it has taken the federal government nearly four years to make that determination."

"This news also refutes the claims by Dr. Jim Chatters and others in the scientific community that these are the remains of some wayward Caucasian - a notion that has been perpetuated by many in the news media. "

"Now that the Interior Department has determined that the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act applies, we want to work constructively with them on the next step in the NAGPRA process - determining cultural affiliation between the Ancient One and the Tribes. "

"I believe tribes across the nation will continue to insist that the remains of their ancestors stay in the ground and not be subject to unnecessary testing that results in the destruction of human remains."
